Lachen is a beautiful town situated in Northern part of Sikkim. It is a small village comprising of about 150-200 houses, majorly inhabited by the Tibetans and Bhutia tribes. It is located at an elevation of 2,750 metres. The name Lachen means "big pass". The centuries old Lachen Monastery situated atop the village offers a panoramic view of the town. Challenging trekking trails, lush valleys, serene lakes and secluded landscapes are some of the things that Lachen has to offer. This untouched beauty  has only recently been open to tourists  by the Sikkimese government has much to offer to both the adventurous and solitude searching souls.


 Lachen is alluring in its simplicity  Not yet as big a tourist destination as Lachung, it retains a freshness which is very appealing. Lachen is the starting point for some of the most interesting treks in North Sikkim as well as the gateway to the holy Guru Dongmar and Tso Lhamu lakes. The area is restricted for foreigners, but special passes can be procured in advance. A few lodges are available here for stay as well as Forest Department and a PWD Bungalows.

 The Lachung Monastery widely known as Lachen Gompa  is an old Buddhist monastery of the state sikkim located in the Lachen valley. This monastery constitutes the base for the Green Lake Trekking and climbing activities in the state. The monastery belongs to the Nyingmapa division of Mahayana Buddhism.

The Singba Rhododendron sanctuary is located near Lachen village in the Yumthang valley and is among the 6 sanctuaries of Khangchendzonga National Park. It is majorly famous for having 40 varities of Rhododendrons. It is blessed with rich and varied fauna.

Thangu Valley is situated at a distance of 30 kilometres from Lachen and is very beautiful place with less greenery. An annual Yak race is organized in the region and is quite popular with tourists. Chopta Valley is relatively unexplored and untouched. It is located in northeast sikkim. Rich with alpine trees orchids and rhododendrons, enthralling lakes and rivers add to the beauty of chopta valley.

Gurudongmar Lake, is one of the highest lakes in the world. It is considered sacred by both Buddhists and Sikhs.
